During the week of July 6, the City of Mountain View will remove a number of sycamore trees in poor condition near the Mountain View Public Library along Franklin Street. At a later date, the City will also remove affected trees in Pioneer Park. The City is developing a replacement planting plan, with new trees anticipated to be installed in late fall or early winter.

For the past 18 months, the City’s Urban Forestry team has been monitoring the health of a number of sycamore trees in this area. While staff have ruled out several common pathogens, the specific cause of the trees’ decline remains undetermined. Unfortunately, several trees have experienced significant decline and need to be removed. The 35 affected trees are marked with red triangles on the map.

The City will place barricades and temporary “No Parking” signs along Franklin Street in advance of the tree removal work. Parking spaces will be reopened as work progresses.

In the meantime, the City has retained additional arborist services to lead the investigation into the trees’ decline and help identify the cause, which will guide the City's response strategy.
