Project Installation May 2025
The City is excited to enhance the heart of Downtown with a new decorative street treatment along the central walkway on the 100, 200, and 300 blocks of Castro Street. The “Ribbons” design—selected in 2024—will bring added color, visual interest, and contribute to the welcoming, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.
Project FAQs
How was this design selected? After presenting three street treatment options to the Visual Arts Committee (January 17, 2024) and the Council Transportation Committee (January 30, 2024), both committees recommended proceeding (with slight modifications) with the “Ribbons” concept and proposed colors.
When is this taking place? Painting is tentatively scheduled to begin in early May (weather permitting). Standard work hours are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday (pending emergency exceptions). Tentative schedule below:
How long will this take? Only half a block will be closed at at a time, and the entire project is expected to be completed in two weeks.
Will businesses be open? Yes! Shops and restaurants are open. Sidewalk access will remain open throughout the project.
How is the City communicating about this project? The City will proactively share updates with the public and businesses to help minimize impacts on Downtown visitors during this time.
