About the Exhibitions

Each year, the City of Mountain View Visual Arts Committee (VAC) curates a diverse series of rotating exhibits featuring local Bay Area artists and artist collectives. Exhibited in the lobby of the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts (MVCPA), these installations serve as a dynamic gateway to the City's premier cultural venue and Downtown Mountain View.

"Broken Symmetries: Geometric Patterns of Nature"

• Details: John’s artistic practice centers on exploring the wonders of the natural world through geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and the novel use of materials.  His work straddles the line between representational and abstract, between what is familiar and what is foreign.  He uses recognizable materials in unexpected ways, eliciting questions about how the material was transformed.  His work explores decay, corrosion, deterioration, imperfections that are strangely hypnotic and provide a visual record of a release of kinetic energy.

Exhibition Selection Process

To ensure artistic excellence and community relevance, all exhibits are selected through a competitive, transparent jurying process:

• Application: Bay Area based artists are invited to submit proposals, including a portfolio of work and artist statement.
• Evaluation: The City's Visual Arts Committee, a volunteer advisory body that supports that City's public art program, individually reviews and scores each application based on artistic quality, originality, and how the work will engage visitors to the MVCPA.  
• Selection: Final exhibition selections are made during the Committee's public meetings, ensuring the process is open and accountable to the community.
